What is an Iron Filter?

Iron is a mineral in the earth that can get into ground water. Iron can build up inside pipes and, over time, create blockages which makes it difficult for water to pass through. If there is iron in your household water, you may notice red, brown or yellow staining inside sinks, showers and tubs, toilets and even on your clothing. Another way iron is apparent is if there is a metallic taste to your water.

When your home's water has a high concentration of iron, an iron filter is the best solution.

How an Iron Filter Works

First, an air injection system injects air into the house's water. Then, the air oxidizes the iron in the water over a period of "contact time" in the installed contact tank. Next, iron particles are filtered out of the water via the filter tank. An iron filter contains a media bed that contains an oxidizing agent. Alberta Water Systems uses the Patterson filter-ag which is a synthetic sand for lighter weight and easier backwash.

Every so often, the filter undergoes a "backwash" which rinses the media bed, sending it to waste, so that the media can continually filter the iron from your water.

Once installed, the iron filter requires little maintenance. Depending on the amount of water usage in your home, an iron filter need to have the media re-bedded every 10 years or so.

If you have an iron filter in your home and you notice staining or a metallic taste, it may be time to have your iron filter re-bedded. Call Alberta Water Systems for inquiries about iron in your water: 780-449-9295.
