How Does a Water Softener Work?

How a softener works:

  1. Hard water enters your home and into the water softener.

  2. The sodium on the resin beads are exchanged for the hard water's minerals, removing them from the water.

  3. The newly softened water then exits the tank and goes into your home.

Softener Regeneration Cycle

After a predetermined time frame, usually two weeks, the resin beads are rinsed of the minerals and are "recharged". This is commonly called a "regen cycle" or "backwash".

A salt-water (brine) solution moves through the resin tank, which rinses the beads and exchanges sodium for the hard water minerals that have collected in the resin.

The brine solution and minerals are flushed from the tank. The resin beads are now renewed or "recharged", ready to collect the minerals from hard water again.

It is recommended to do a backwash when water usage in the home is low. Our servicepersons will set the backwash time for around 2 a.m. so that the water is not in high demand at the time of backwash.
