Alberta Water Systems has two recommendations for the treatment of iron bacteria. The first is to shock chlorinate the well. Doing this once per year may be enough to resolve the problem of iron bacteria. You can find our previous blog post about iron bacteria treatment to the well here.
If the iron bacteria start to develop again within a few months, Point of Entry treatment may be required. This would involve a chlorine solution being added to the water line after a pressure tank. A Stenner pump then adds the chlorine solution to the bottom of a retention tank. The retention tank is the most important part of the process. It is an empty pressure vessel that allows the chlorine to have contact time with the water to kill the iron bacteria. Once water has had contact time with the chlorine, the water is taken from the top of the tank for use. Depending on the iron content Alberta Water Systems recommends the water to go through either a backwashing iron filter or carbon filter before it continues its journey to the rest of the house for use.
