Hard Water vs. Soft Water?

If you've noticed spots on your dishes or residue on your clothing, you may have hard water in your home. Hard water is an excess of calcium and magnesium in your water. Neither are harmful however, high concentrations of both can cause wear and tear to your large and small appliances as well as your clothing over time. For instance, you may notice scale buildup on the inside of your kettle or coffee pot. You may also notice the feeling of residue on your body or hair after washing.

Soft water has less calcium and magnesium and is therefore gentler on yourself and your home. Less scale and mineral buildup extends the life of your appliances, pipes, and equals less scrubbing for you. Softened water also helps keep moisture in skin, makes hair feel silkier and there is no bodily residue after washing. It is more effective for cleaning than hard water so you can use less detergents, soaps and hair products, saving you money.

If your home has hard water, a softener can be installed to reduce the concentration of minerals in your water. A softener runs your water through resin that is coated in positively charged ions. The resin exchanges the minerals for sodium and softened water exits the tank, flowing into your home.
